Gannett Broadcasting Announces Appointments

ARLINGTON, Va. — Craig A. Dubow has been promoted to executive vice president of Gannett Television, a new position.

Dubow had been president and general manager of WXIA-TV, the Gannett-owned NBC affiliate in Atlanta, Ga., and has had responsibilities for three other Gannett-owned NBC affiliates. In his new role, he will add responsibilities and some stations in a Gannett Television reorganization to replace Ron Townsend, president, who is retiring next month.

Robert J. (Bob) Walker has been promoted to vice president and general manager of WXIA-TV to replace Dubow. He was most recently vice president/broadcast with responsibility for day-to-day operations for WXIA.

The announcements were made by Cecil L. Walker, president and CEO of Gannett Broadcasting.

“Craig has made many strong contributions to Gannett Television since he joined the company in 1981. He has worked at several of our stations and has held many key management positions. We are confident that his industry experience and his leadership capabilities will enable him to help our television group achieve greater success,” said Walker.

Dubow stated the following about his successor: “Bob has done an outstanding job of managing the day-to-day operations of the station. Under his leadership, 11Alive will continue to demonstrate its commitment to the people of the Atlanta community.”

Dubow joined Gannett in 1981 as an account executive at K*USA-TV in Denver. His tenure at K*USA included the positions national sales manager and local sales manager. In 1987, he moved to KVUE-TV in Austin as general sales manager. He was named vice president and station manager of KVUE in 1988; in 1990 he was promoted to president and general manager. He has served in his current role since 1992. Dubow began his career in broadcasting at KPRC-TV in Houston with a part-time position in production; while at KPRC, he moved into the sales arena as an account executive in 1979.

Dubow serves as a member of the NBC Affiliate Board of Directors, the Board of Directors of the United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta, the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau and is a member of the Metro Atlanta Chamber’s Board of Advisors. He is a member of the Northside Hospital Foundation Board of Trustees, the Northside Hospital Foundation Grants Committee, and the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce. He serves on the steering committee of “Peach of an Athlete,” an awards ceremony benefiting the Boy Scouts of America North Georgia Council. He also works with the Woodruff Arts Center Leads Gifts Campaign and the Advisory Board for Habitat for Humanity.

Dubow earned his bachelor of science degree in 1977 from the University of Texas. He and his wife, Denise, have three children.

Walker joined WXIA-TV in 1988 as a sales research analyst. He was promoted to manager of marketing and sales development in 1990 and then director of marketing in 1993. Since 1994, he has served as vice president/broadcast with responsibilities for overall station operations.

Walker began his professional career in 1982 with Arthur Andersen & Company in the Denver office and left in 1988 as a licensed CPA.

Walker graduated with a bachelor of science degree in business from the University of Colorado, Boulder. He and his wife, Sara, have two children.

ARLINGTON, Va. — Jeffrey H. Lee has been named vice president and general manager of WBIR-TV, the Gannett-owned NBC affiliate in Knoxville, Tenn.

The announcement was made, at a WBIR staff meeting, by Cecil L. Walker, president and CEO of Gannett Broadcasting. Lee replaces Chris Gallu, who resigned recently.

“Jeff Lee’s reputation as a knowledgeable and experienced television general manager provides him special opportunities in our industry. We were delighted with his immediate expression of interest in WBIR and are proud to welcome him to the family. We know that, under his leadership, WBIR will continue its tradition of excellence and commitment to the people in the Knoxville community,” Walker said.

Lee served as general manager of WESH-TV in Orlando, Fla., from 1991-1995. Prior to WESH, he was general manager at KSBW-TV in Salinas/Monterey, Santa Cruz, Calif., for five years. His 10 years at KPRC-TV in Houston, Texas, included the positions general manager, station manager, general sales manager, national sales manager and local account executive. Lee also served as a national sales rep for Katz Communications in Los Angeles and in New York. He began his career in the broadcast industry in 1962 in the production department at KPRC.

Lee graduated from North Texas State University. He and his wife, Christy, currently reside in Winter Park, Fla., and are in the process of relocating to Knoxville.
