A scarcity of live programming in an era dominated by streaming services and on-demand viewing options fuels this resurgence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the wake of record-breaking viewership for live events \u2014 the Oscars, Super Bowl, and Grammys all come to mind \u2014 the landscape of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tegna.com\/advertise\/the-ultimate-guide-to-tv-advertising\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TV advertising<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is undergoing a profound transformation, especially with appointment TV, live events, and sports.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Appointment TV Viewing is Changing<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn the past, the idea of appointment TV viewing was that \u2018this is the only time I can watch\u2019 a favorite show or program unless it was recorded on a VHS or TiVo,\u201d says Al Reynolds, Director of Research &amp; Analytics at TEGNA. \u201cViewers would worry that if they waited to watch a show, they\u2019d miss out on the watercooler conversation the next day.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And this phenomenon &#8211; now known as FOMO &#8211; was a big one.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m old enough to remember the Dallas finale, which culminated in this huge event attracting 33.3 million viewers,\u201d Reynolds notes. \u201cThere was this cultural phenomenon that saw Networks manipulate audiences into tuning in and watching big season finales, like Dallas, which saw 33.3 million viewers, or Seinfeld with 76 million viewers,\u201d he notes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But today, things have changed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSo many streaming companies have created their own content, which is the watercooler talk these days,\u201d says Reynolds. \u201cSo streaming services are blurring the lines between how you watch movies and how you watch television. With entertainment programming being available on so many platforms and everyone watching at different times, there will never be another event like the Seinfeld finale again. It\u2019s almost mathematically impossible.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Appointment TV Meaning<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To clarify, appointment TV simply refers to television programming that viewers can watch only at specific times, as opposed to streaming or on-demand TV. The total unduplicated audience across all three games was 133 million, the second-highest Thanksgiving Day total audience on record, behind only 2022.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen it comes to sports, there\u2019s an urgency in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tegna.com\/advertise\/the-power-play-why-sports-dominate-live-viewership-in-broadcast-and-how-your-brand-can-score-big\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">watching it live<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d says Reynolds. \u201cWith entertainment content, you can stream programming whenever. But with sports, fans want to be in the moment and not see spoilers on social media later, and I think that\u2019s why the NFL\u2019s popularity has just exploded over the years.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And it\u2019s not just the NFL seeing a boost in live audiences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The NCAA Basketball tournament, also known as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tegna.com\/advertise\/tips-for-march-madness-advertising\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">March Madness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, has overcome <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsmediawatch.com\/2023\/04\/ncaa-national-championship-ratings-record-low-uconn-sdsu-cbs-mens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">historic lows in 2023<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to rebound significantly in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncaa.com\/news\/basketball-men\/article\/2024-03-25\/ncaa-division-i-mens-basketball-championship-concludes-first-week-strong-ratings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2024 and set new records<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 2022 Olympics in Beijing also saw record-low viewership, but like March Madness, it is poised for a rebound in 2024 too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCOVID did a number on a lot of things, including live sports, and The Olympics have been on a downward trajectory,\u201d says Reynolds. \u201cBut the X factor is where the games take place. This year, we\u2019re back to normal, and Paris has a certain charm that will add some intrigue from a general audience.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Award Goes To \u2026 Live Events<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thanks in part to the relative scarcity of live content in an era of on-demand viewing options, award shows are also experiencing historic viewership numbers.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tegna.com\/advertise\/2024-academy-awards-win-big-audiences-via-broadcast-tv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2024 Academy Awards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> became the most-watched Oscars since 2020, with 19.5 million viewers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 2024 Golden Globes jumped 50% from 2023 to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexttv.com\/blogs\/why-tv-tentpole-ad-buys-are-worth-it-bc-guest-blog#:~:text=Placing%20ads%20in%20tentpole%20programming,13.83%25%20from%202022%20to%202023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9.4 million viewers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/tv\/news\/grammys-ratings-viewers-2024-1235896637\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grammy\u2019s viewership<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also climbed 34% from 2023 to 16.9 million.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like the Olympics, The Oscars have been on a downward trajectory too,\u201d notes Reynolds. \u201cBut again, there\u2019s renewed interest this year with the big blockbusters and cultural moments associated with \u2018Barbenheimer.\u2019 With a 5% viewership increase from last year, it\u2019s very encouraging to see the Oscars return the way they did.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>This Just In \u2026 Local News Dominates National News\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amid a sea of on-demand streaming programming available to watch anytime and anywhere, there is one form of content that audiences can\u2019t get anywhere else: their local news.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The appeal of local news lies in the stations\u2019 ability to connect to local communities, offering content that resonates deeply with viewers and familiarity with friendly faces among local newscasters, journalists, sports reporters, and meteorologists.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn TEGNA markets, the average local news delivery outpaces the combined delivery of all three major TV news networks: CNN, MSNBC, and FOX,\u201d says Reynolds. \u201cWhat does that tell you? It says people are watching the local news in their local markets because it\u2019s content they can\u2019t get anywhere else.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And it&#8217;s content that they trust. TVB\u2019s Media Comparison Study found that local broadcast news stations are the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/knightfoundation.org\/articles\/local-news-most-trusted-in-keeping-americans-informed-about-their-communities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most trusted channels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for informing Americans about what\u2019s happening in their communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Why Live Audiences Appeal to Advertisers<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What does the resurgence in broadcast viewership mean for advertising? These mass events have a cultural buzz that demands viewing in real-time, especially if you\u2019re going to see it first thing in the news the next day.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For advertisers, this is a real opportunity to take advantage of these cultural touchpoints and help generate those water cooler moments and discussions that extend beyond the event itself.
