Gannett Celebrates 2009 Top Employees

Gannett honored its companywide award winners and Unsung Heroes April 7 at a ceremony at Gannett/USA TODAY corporate headquarters.

Gannett announced award winners for 2009 Manager of the Year, Innovator of the Year, Sales Executive of the Year, Corporate Staffer of the Year and the Leadership & Diversity Award and the Individual Leadership & Diversity Award.

Award winners announced at the ceremony and the finalists are:

MANAGER OF THE YEAR – Susie Ellwood, CEO of Detroit Media Partnership. Finalists: Janet Mason, president and general manager of WZZM-TV, Grand Rapids-Kalamazoo-Battle Creek, MI; and Scott Miller, Newspaper Network of Central Ohio, Group Majors/Nationals/Regional sales manager.

INNOVATOR OF THE YEAR – Ellen Crooke, vice president/news and information center, WXIA/WATL-TV, Atlanta, GA. Finalists: Brian Butts, director of digital and technology at Enquirer Media, Cincinnati; and Kim Torrison, sales director, Gannett Digital Ventures Employment Sales Center, Indianapolis, IN.

SALES EXECUTIVE OF THE YEAR – Laura Southwick, senior account executive, USA WEEKEND, Chicago. Finalists: Jackie Meddles, account executive, Enquirer Media, Cincinnati; and Chris O’Hara, senior account executive, Gannett Digital, New York, NY.

CORPORATE STAFFER OF THE YEAR – Evan Ray, senior vice president/finance and operations, U.S. Community Publishing. Finalists: Julie Heskett, vice president/finance, Gannett Broadcasting; and Tom Burgum, director of benefits, Gannett Human Resources.

LEADERSHIP & DIVERSITY UNIT AWARD – The Newspaper Network of Central Ohio. Finalists: The Tennessean at Nashville; The Arizona Republic at Phoenix; and The Times at Shreveport, LA.

LEADERSHIP & DIVERSITY INDIVIDUAL AWARD – Johnnie Mosley, employment supervisor at The Courier-Journal in Louisville, KY.

In addition, Gannett honored its Unsung Hero award winners. They are:

    Will Alexander, Chief Solutions Architect, GMTI;
    Laura Dalton, Senior Manager/Publications, Corporate Communications, Gannett;
    Sara Davis, Manager/Education Products and Programs, USA TODAY Education, McLean, VA;
    Denise Goolsby, Reporter, The Desert Sun, Palm Springs, CA;
    Brian Hall, Multimedia Photojournalist Video Specialist/Sports Producer, WFMY-TV, Greensboro, NC;
    Sophie Holmes, Services Coordinator, Newsquest Digital Media.
