Gannett Releases May Statistical Report
McLEAN, VA – Gannett Co., Inc. (NYSE: GCI) reported today that total pro forma operating revenues for the fifth period ended June 2, 2002 were almost even with the same period in 2001.
Pro forma newspaper advertising revenues declined 2 percent in the period on a 3 percent increase in ROP volume and a 6 percent rise in preprint distribution.
Pro forma classified revenues declined 1 percent in the May period on a 6 percent increase in ad volume. Employment revenues decreased 14 percent. Classified real estate revenues advanced 5 percent, and automotive also increased 5 percent. Overall, the company’s classified results from Newsquest continue to be stronger than its domestic results.
Pro forma local advertising revenues increased 1 percent on a 2 percent decline in ad volume. Once again, the performance of the company’s small and medium-sized advertisers in its domestic newspapers outpaced the revenue performance of its largest advertisers.
Pro forma national advertising revenues decreased 11 percent on a 1 percent increase in ad volume. National ad volume at the company’s local domestic newspapers increased 6 percent. At USA TODAY, advertising revenues declined 18 percent on a 21 percent decline in paid ad pages to 359 from 452. For the year-to-date, USA TODAY’s paid pages numbered 1,995 compared to 2,295 last year, while ad revenues were 10 percent lower.
Pro forma television revenues increased 7 percent in the fifth period. National revenues increased 15 percent and local revenues grew 2 percent. Television pacings for June continue to be strong and are presently up about 20 percent year-over-year.
In addition to the revenue and statistical summary, attached is a chart which shows the consolidated Gannett Online audience shares for April from Media Metrix and Nielsen/Net Ratings. In April, Gannett’s domestic Websites, according to Media Metrix, had 11 million unique visitors reaching almost 10 percent of the Internet audience. Newsquest is also an Internet leader in the U.K.
Ad linage for Newsquest is not included in the ad volume statistics. Circulation volume numbers for Newsquest’s paid daily newspapers are included in the enclosed statistics, but volume from unpaid daily and non-daily publications is not included in the circulation volume statistics.
