Gannett’s Barbara Wall Honored with First Amendment Award by Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press
McLEAN, VA – Barbara Wall, vice president and senior associate general counsel at Gannett Co., Inc. (NYSE: GCI), was among the First Amendment Awards winners honored by the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press.
During her 27 years representing Gannett on First Amendment and other issues, Wall has worked with reporters, editors, producers and news directors on some of Gannett’s most important stories. She has helped quash more than 1,000 subpoenas of reporters and has guided hundreds of information access suits.

After graduating from the University of Virginia Law School, Wall spent five years with the New York City law firm of Satterlee & Stephens where her clients included CBS and Doubleday Books. She moved to Washington, D.C., to join the legal staff of Gannett in 1985.
Wall is a frequent speaker on First Amendment issues. As chair of the ABA Forum on Communications Law, she founded the Forum’s Annual Meeting and the ABA’s Women in Communications Law committee. Wall has chaired the Newspaper Association of America’s Legal Affairs committee, and serves on the board of The Media Institute in Washington, D.C. She has taught Communications Law as an adjunct faculty member at George Washington University and American University, and is on the faculty for the Practising Law Institute’s annual Communications Law program in New York. In 2007 she was the recipient of the Women Bar Association’s annual “Star of the Bar” award.
