Agreement for Gannett to Acquire Several Newspapers in New Jersey Is Announced

ARLINGTON, Va. — An agreement for Gannett Co., Inc. to acquire several newspapers in New Jersey, including the Daily Record at Morristown, from The Goodson Newspaper Group was announced today.

Closing on the acquisition is expected to take place in early summer. Terms of the deal were not announced.

Gannett will also acquire the Ocean County Observer, a daily newspaper in Toms River, N.J., and several weekly newspapers in Toms River and Manahawkin, N.J. In addition to the newspapers, Gannett will acquire various total market coverage (TMC) products associated with the newspapers. Gannett currently publishes five daily newspapers in the state.

“We are pleased that the newspapers will be sold to the Gannett Company. We know that the properties will continue to be well managed and serve the best interests of their communities,” said David N. Hurwitz, president & CEO of The Goodson Newspaper Group.

“We have long been very optimistic about New Jersey and believe it’s a great state in which to operate newspapers. We will be very pleased to have the Daily Record, the Ocean County Observer and the weekly newspapers part of Gannett,” said Gary Watson, president of the Newspaper Division.

Gannett is a nationwide news and information company that publishes 87 daily newspapers, including USA TODAY, and USA WEEKEND, a newspaper magazine. Gannett also operates 21 television stations and cable television systems in five states.
