TEGNA Invests in The Video Call Center, LLC

McLEAN, VA – TEGNA Inc. (NYSE: TGNA), formerly Gannett Co., Inc., today announced it has invested in The Video Call Center, LLC (VCC), a video technology and content company. The VCC uses patented television workflow technology to create live, original content from video callers. The technology will be used by TEGNA Media, the largest independent station group of major network affiliates in the top 25 markets, reaching approximately one-third of all television households nationwide.

The Video Call Center has created a new genre of television called video caller television, where entire programs are built with video callers from anywhere in the world. TEGNA Media plans to use the VCC’s technology to create innovative, original, lower cost programming across broadcast, social, mobile and online. The VCC has already produced more than 100 hours of live programming including a full-month of live, daily shows on TEGNA Media’s KUSA in Denver. The KUSA programming focused on the Colorado Theater Shooting Trial and featured experts, attorneys and callers from across the country exchanging questions and comments about the trial live on-air.

“We believe this digital technology will foster innovation in the area of live, interactive programming across multiple platforms,” said Dave Lougee, president, TEGNA Media. “This forward-thinking partnership positions us well digitally, and in the future, as the VCC seamlessly combines social media, television and the web to maximize viewer engagement.”

The VCC uses specialized and patented technology to build full shows of callers, screened in real-time, and selected live by the show’s host. Special techniques are used to improve video call reliability. The VCC was created by long-time network executive and former Wall Street analyst Tom Wolzien, and developed by a team of broadcast, software, and hardware experts.

“The Video Call Center is re-inventing television and TEGNA’s investment will help speed that re-invention process across the industry,” said Wolzien, founder, creator and chairman of The Video Call Center. “Within five years, video caller television will be a mainstay among broadcast stations, cable networks and web services seeking to extend viewer interaction.”
