The Des Moines Register Wins Pulitzer Prize

McLEAN, VA – Mary Chind of The Des Moines Register won a 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography. She won for her photograph of the moment before a rescuer, dangling in a makeshift harness, saves a woman trapped in the foaming water beneath a dam.

In addition, Asbury Park (NJ) Press was a finalist in the Public Service category for its examination of how an archaic property tax system harms New Jersey’s economy and ordinary families.

Both The Des Moines Register and the Asbury Park Press are part of Gannett’s U.S. Community Publishing. “We are extremely proud of the work done by Mary Chind and The Des Moines Register.

This is an excellent example of the outstanding journalism Gannett provides every day to communities across the U.S.,” says Robert J. Dickey, president of U.S. Community Publishing. “We congratulate the Asbury Park Press, too, on its amazing work and for being a finalist in the Public Service category.” Columbia University in New York City announced the 2010 Pulitzer Prizes, which are awarded on the recommendation of the Pulitzer Prize Board.
