Gannett Releases December Statistical Report

McLEAN, VA – Gannett Co., Inc. (NYSE: GCI) reported today that total pro forma operating revenues for the twelfth period ended December 29, 2002 increased 7 percent, benefiting from strong television revenues and solid year-over-year gains in newspaper advertising.

Pro forma (assuming that all properties presently owned were owned in both periods) newspaper advertising revenues in December were up 9 percent compared with the same period in 2001 on a 5 percent increase in ROP volume and a 15 percent advance in preprint distribution. As noted last month, due to the later date of Thanksgiving this year, for comparison purposes the company recommends combining November and December results. For the full year, pro forma newspaper advertising revenues were up slightly.

Pro forma classified revenues increased 8 percent in the December period on a 7 percent increase in ad volume. Employment revenues increased 1 percent over the same period last year. Classified real estate revenues advanced 12 percent, and automotive also increased 12 percent. For all of 2002, pro forma classified revenues were slightly lower than in 2001.

Pro forma local advertising revenues increased 7 percent on a 1 percent increase in ad volume. The performance of the company’s small and medium-sized advertisers in its domestic newspapers outpaced the revenue performance of its largest advertisers. For the full year, pro forma local ad revenues increased 1 percent.

Pro forma national advertising revenues rose 14 percent on a 16 percent increase in ad volume. National volume at the company’s local domestic newspapers advanced 16 percent in the period compared with the same interval in 2001. At USA TODAY, advertising revenues were up 16 percent on a 14 percent increase in paid ad pages to 484 from 425. For the year-to-date, USA TODAY’s paid pages numbered 4,869 compared with 5,481 in 2001, while ad revenues were 6 percent lower.

Pro forma television revenues increased 13 percent in the twelfth period. National revenues rose 12 percent and local revenues grew 14 percent. For all of 2002, television revenues increased 16 percent, buoyed by Olympic and very strong political advertising.

In addition to the revenue and statistical summary, attached is a chart which shows the consolidated Gannett Online audience shares for December from Nielsen//NetRatings. In December, Gannett’s domestic Web sites had 11.8 million unique visitors reaching 9 percent of the Internet audience.

Ad linage for Newsquest is not included in the ad volume statistics. Circulation volume numbers for Newsquest’s paid daily newspapers are included in the enclosed statistics, but volume from unpaid daily and non-daily publications is not included in the circulation volume statistics.
