Gannett Announces Appointments at USA WEEKEND
ARLINGTON, Va. — Marcia Bullard has been named president and CEO of USA WEEKEND and Charles M. Gabrielson has been appointed publisher, it was announced today.
Bullard also will continue as editor of the weekly magazine, which is distributed in over 475 newspapers and has a circulation of 19.8 million.
“Marcia Bullard and Chuck Gabrielson have been integral to the stunning success that USA WEEKEND has had over the past decade,” said Gary L. Watson, president of Gannett’s Newspaper Division. “They are ready and able to assume this additional responsibility.”
Brette Popper, president and publisher of USA WEEKEND since 1989, announced she is resigning at the end of this month.
“Brette has been an outstanding leader for USA WEEKEND,” Watson said. “We very much regret — but can understand and appreciate — her decision. We wish Brette and her family all the best.”
Bullard, 43, joined Gannett in 1974 at the Rochester (N.Y.) Democrat and Chronicle. In 1982, she became a member of the staff that launched USA TODAY, where she served as deputy managing editor of the Life section.
In 1985, she was named managing editor of USA WEEKEND. She became editor in 1989.
She is a 1974 graduate of Southern Illinois University.
Gabrielson, 46, joined Gannett in 1971 at the Westchester-Rockland (N.Y.) Newspapers, where he served in advertising management roles, including advertising director. He joined USA WEEKEND in 1989 as executive vice president.
He also has served as advertising director of Macy’s, Inc., and marketing and sales director of Advertising Age.
He holds two degrees, including an MBA, from Long Island University.
